(Feb. 18, 2011 – Slidell, LA) – In January, Slidell Memorial Hospital and North Shore Square Mall celebrated the accomplishments of over 100 local Mall Walkers at their annual award ceremony.
SMH Volunteer Coordinator Laurie Manley presented certificates of accomplishment and SMH t-shirts to all in attendance. North Shore Square Marketing Director Kimberly Jacobs attended to personally congratulate each Mall Walker.
While every Mall Walker was commended for their accomplishments, the following are the Top 10 mile walkers for 2010:
Joan Grego – 499 miles
Ed Jonas – 502 miles
Bettye Eastman – 594 miles
Brenda Faughn – 594 miles
Joyce Landry – 606 miles
Mary Ann Melton – 691 miles
Walter Laboe – 950 miles
George McCain – 1005.5 miles
Joe Marchetta – 1018 miles
Joyce Lumley – 1020 miles
"I am in awe of this group. In 2010, they logged over 18,000 miles. That is 36,000 laps of the mall. Amazing,” Manley said. Manley coordinates the project, which includes monthly birthday parties as well as the yearly award ceremony.
Slidell has a large community of enthusiastic and energetic people following their feet over and around the corridors of the North Shore Square Mall, she said. Every day, they rack up hundreds of miles on foot, while they socialize, window shop and exercise their way to better health.
Mall walking provides a safe, weather-friendly, free place to exercise. North Shore Square opens at 7 a.m. for mall walking; however, most stores do not open until 10 a.m. Anyone interested in mall walking can visit the information desk in the North Shore Square Mall or contact Manley at 985-649-8531.
