(Slidell, La.–Feb. 25, 2011)— Slidell Memorial Hospital (SMH) will host its second annual special health fair designed specifically for junior and senior high-aged girls that promises more high-energy, fun and informative programs. This health fair is in addition to its monthly prenatal and parenting education classes and community support groups, to educate and support parents in raising their families. A Day for Girls' Health: Your Health, Your Body, Your Future

The second annual health fair specifically for junior high and high school-age girls will feature informative booths, "iChats” and events, door prizes, beauty tips, hip hop and Zumba dance lessons, and a fashion show. It's all designed to make this a fun-filled event focusing on living a healthier lifestyle. A Day for Girls' Health is co-sponsored by Camellia City OB/GYN, SMH Regional Cancer Center, Junior Auxiliary of Slidell and the SMH Parenting Center. Parent Education Classes

Children in the Middle: A two-session co-parenting class for separated, divorcing and divorced parents

During this two-part interactive class by Parent Educator Alice Barattini, parents will learn effective methods for keeping their children out of the middle of divorce-related issues, how to look at conflicts from their children's point of view and how to communicate in a healthy way. Sponsored in part by Capitol One Bank. Participants must attend both sessions to receive a certificate. To register call, (985) 661-2657.

Infant/Child CPR

This class with Celeste Collins, RN, will teach you what you need to know in the event your child is choking or stops breathing. Learn how to perform life-saving CPR techniques and relieve choking through hands-on training. To register call, (985) 661-2657.

Toilet Training 101

Before attempting to kick the diaper habit, parents must first determine if their child is ready for the next step. Parent Educator Taffy Morrison will discuss signs of physical and mental readiness and give practical strategies to succeed in accomplishing toilet training without too much stress! Internet Safety & Awareness

The Web 2.0 Generation is totally absorbed by new technology: texting, social networking, emailing, tweeting…. What's next? Technology has changed the way we conduct our daily lives and the way youth communicate and play. There's no time like the present for parents, adults and members of the community to join in on the efforts to protect all our children whether they live in our homes or not. Join St. Tammany Parish Communication District Public Education Coordinator Michelle Dickerson as she explains what kids are doing online, the risks they may face and what you can do to keep them safe. Preparation for Birth

Designed specifically for first-time parents who are at least six months pregnant. This full-day class will cover: the stages of pregnancy, nutrition, pain management options, hospital stay and recovery, possible complications, and basic newborn care. (Moms are asked to bring a pillow for seating comfort.)

Breastfeeding Clinic

Lactation Consultants offer support and encouragement as they discuss the advantages of breastfeeding, how to get started, how to prevent problems, common concerns and what to expect in the first few weeks.

When: Sat., Mar. 12, 10-11:30 a.m.

Where: SMH Parenting Center Classroom, 2nd floor, SMH Wellness Pavilion, 501 Robert Blvd.

Fee: $25 per person if not pre-registered at SMH

Big Brother, Big Sister

A fun class to prepare children ages 3 - 10 for the arrival of their new sibling. Children will learn safe and proper ways to handle newborns, use life-like baby dolls to practice diapering and other baby care, make a special gift for the baby, and tour Labor/Delivery and Postpartum. Parents receive tips on preparing their children for their new family addition. This class should be attended when Mom is at least 7 months pregnant.

When: Mar. 13, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Where: 12th Street Annex, Room A

Fee: $10 per family due at registration


This two-session course is based on the principles of Dr. Fernand Lamaze. Helpful methods for any birth (natural, epidural, C-section, etc.) will be discussed. Also covered will be the stages of labor, what to expect and the role of the labor support person. Participants will have the opportunity to practice comfort techniques and breathing exercises. (Please bring two pillows and a mat or blanket to participate in floor exercises.)

When: Sat., Mar. 19 and 26, 2 - 6 p.m.

Fee: $50 per couple if pre-registered at SMH; otherwise, $90 per couple, due at registration

Community Parenting

MOMS Club of Slidell

The MOMS Club (Moms Offering Moms Support) is open to all moms who are at home during the day with their children. Parents and their children meet at SMH Parenting Center classroom for play, craft activities, parenting discussion and a chance to meet with other moms and their children. Weekly Support Groups

Me & My Tot Time

Come and meet other parents/grandparents and their little ones at our weekly support/playgroups. Parenting Center staff provides a learning and support opportunity for parents and a social playtime for children. Parents discuss child development issues and parenting tips, while their children enjoy playtime with other little ones. Refreshments, crafts, story time, music and movement activities are also provided. No registration required. For more information, call (985) 649-8529.

Free Car Seat Safety Checks
